James Herbert Crowe, 85

James Herbert Crowe, age 85, of Irvine, Kentucky, died Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the UK Medical Center in Lexington, after a sudden illness.
Known as “Uncle Herb” to his many nephews and nieces, he was a tall, strong, gentle giant of a man with a boyish grin, and a humble servant of the Lord. Mr. Crowe preached his final sermon at his wife’s funeral on January 2, 2014, three days prior to his own death.
He was born on November 7, 1928, to Charles Franklin and Ettie Carroll Crow, the youngest boy of a family of 13 children.
He was a graduate of Estill County High School, class of 1948, and a veteran of the Korean War.
He supported his family by working at IBM in Lexington for 55 years, but his real joy was working the family farm on Sand Hill he affectionately named “Echo Valley.” He often came home from a long day at his ‘city job’ to unwind on his tractor, toiling amid his congregation of cows a few hours each night after supper.
He was a member of the Richmond Primitive Baptist Church called “Little Bethel” where he served as pastor for more than 40 years. He was also the pastor of the Irvine Primitive Baptist Church. His style as a preacher mirrored his life as a husband and father: Devoted, humble, faithful and gracious, with a sense of humor. He was a patient teacher and a storyteller who enjoyed a good laugh.
Many of his friends and co-workers never knew he was a preacher. He didn’t wear his religion on his sleeve, he wore it in his heart and in his deeds. He was quick to offer aid and comfort to the poor, needy and afflicted, whether he knew them or not.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings: Tandy, Ethel Chaney, Lewis, Edward, Martin, Lucy Anna Brandenburg, Franklin, Dorothy, Carvolin, and Dessie Mae Stone.
