Estill County News

Update on Salmonella Poisoning

    The Estill County Health Department continues to work with the KY Department for Public Health, the local hospital and local healthcare providers regarding the salmonella outbreak. The health department has collected food samples and they are being tested at the state lab.
    If you believe you have experienced symptoms of salmonellosis, consult your healthcare provider.  If you have a question, you may contact your local health department at 606-723-5181.
    As of Feb. 16th we have the following numbers to report:
        * 75 people experiencing gastrointestinal illnesses
        * 51 confirmed positive test results for salmonella
        * Numerous test results pending
        * 11 hospitalizations

    Every year, Salmonella is estimated to cause one million foodborne illnesses in the United States, with 19,000 hospitalizations. Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts about a week, but it can last longer for some people and most recover without treatment. Given how common Salmonella outbreaks are in the US, public health agencies from the CDC on down to our local health departments in Kentucky have procedures in place to handle such outbreaks. In fact, every local health department in our state has an Epi Rapid Response Team trained to respond to such outbreaks. Resources from the local, regional and the state level are being utilized to address the situation in Estill County. The state food inspector has been here twice this week to assist the local food inspector and I have been on-site for the past two weeks assisting your local Epi Rapid Response Team with follow-up, investigation and an epidemiologic case-control study.
    We are continuing to receive case reports of individuals with prior signs and symptoms. However, these are not new cases – these are cases confined to a specific time period. We are all working tirelessly to identify and investigate all possible causes of this outbreak. Just as the old saying goes, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day,’ a salmonella outbreak isn’t going to be cured in a day. Epidemiologic investigations take time due to the large number of variables involved in finding the source of the problem. Solutions must be based on sound scientific fact that comes from proper investigation and lab testing and that takes time. Understandably, it is difficult to have patience when people are sick, but playing the ‘blame game’ gets us no closer to a solution and only hinders the process, as resources have to be pulled away from where they are needed most in order to address rumors and mis-information. Patience will always prevail in a crisis and that is what is needed in this instance. We will continue to work diligently to protect the citizens of Estill County.

    Judy Collins, Sr. Regional Epidemiologist

    If you believe you have experienced symptoms of salmonellosis, consult your healthcare provider.  If you have a question, you may contact your local health department at 606-723-5181.
