Jeffery Wayne Dixon, 53

    Jeffery Wayne Dixon, age 53, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016.
    He was born February 14, 1963, in Estill County, a son of the late Roy Dixon Sr. and Fairy Hymer Larson. He was a self-employed farmer and construction worker and had lived in Estill County all of his life.
    Mr. Dixon is survived by a sister: Carolyn Miller (Earl), Garrard County; three brothers: Roy “Dink” Dixon Jr., Linville Dixon (Shirley), and Milton Dixon (Sandra), all of Estill County; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dixon.
    He was preceded in death by two brothers: Doug Dixon and Harold Dixon.
    Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 19th at 1 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. James Hardin with burial following in the South Irvine Cemetery. Friends may call after 11 a.m., Tuesday, until service time at the funeral home.

David Daniel Campbell, 72

    David Daniel Campbell, age 72, the husband of Grace Lynch Campbell, passed away Friday evening, July 15, 2016, at The St. Joseph-East Hospital in Lexington.
    Mr. Campbell was born on March 13, 1944 in Estill County, the son of the late Isom G. and Mary Jane Neal Campbell. He was a retired employee of Duncan Machinery in Lexington and was a member of the Lexington Road Church of God.
    Survivors in addition to his wife include one son, Roy David Campbell; two daughters: Karen Elizabeth Campbell Allen and Linda Carol Campbell Bonnett (George Frederick II); two grandsons: Fredrick David Bonnett and Darius Campbell Allen; one sister, Estine Tipton; as well as several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Elaine Campbell; one brother, Joe Campbell; and three sisters: Cordelia Reffitt, Clara Marcum and Katherine Pasley.
    Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 18th at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Frohardt officiating. Burial was in the Congleton Cemetery in Estill County. Friends called from 4-8 p.m., Sunday, July 17th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Fredrick David Bonnett, Darius Campbell Allen, Chucky Plowman, Rodney Reffitt, Danny Wood, Andrew Standiford and William Standiford.

    William C. Hall, age 76, of Furnace Junction in Ravenna, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016 in Clay City following a short illness.
    He was born May 23, 1940 in Estill County and was the son of the late Beedie and Cecil Gillespie Hall. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Gum Springs Church. He had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his wife, Gearldine Townsend Hall.
    He is survived by two daughters: Wanda Hall, Estill County; and Samantha Burgher, Powell County; three sons: William C. Hall Jr., Bracken County; Virl Lee Hall and Harvey D. Hall, both of Estill County; three sisters: Ruby Gross, Powell County; Irene Hammond, Danville; and Faye Hall, Sadieville; two brothers: Harvey G. Hall, Sadieville; and Carl Hall, Clark County; eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    He was preceded in death by several siblings.
    Funeral services were conducted Monday, July 18th at 11 a.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Gainous Rogers. Burial was at the Watson Ridge Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Sunday, July 17th at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Ryan Burgher, Timothy Burgher, Wesley Banks, Virl Hall, Shane Burgher and Lorenzo Calderon.

Helen Joy McGee, age 86

    Helen Joy McGee, age 86, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016, at the Madison Health & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Kentucky, following a long illness.
    She was born February 11, 1930 in Estill County and was the daughter of the late Hulbert Mays and Della Smith McIntosh. She was a former employee of Cedar Village Restaurant and a member of the Jehovah Witness Church.
    Mrs. McGee was preceded in death by her husband, William McGee.
    She is survived by two daughters: Michelle Ruble (Rickie) Irvine; and Juanita Leavitt, Florida; two sons: Leonard McGee and Joel McGee, both of Irvine; one sister: Glenna Witt, Irvine; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by one sister, Geraldine McIntosh; one brother, Cecil Mays; and one grandchild.
    Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 17th at 2 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Bill Daily. Burial was at the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called after 12 Noon, Sunday, at the funeral home.
    Pallbearers were Jake McGee, Shannon Melvin, Sharron McGee, Anthony Alexander, Barry Witt, and Charles Andrews.

Howard C. Mackey, 98

    Howard C. Mackey, age 98, of Seymour, Indiana passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at the Seymour Place following a long illness.
    He was born March 14, 1918 in Neon, Kentucky and was the son of the late Otis and Sally Jo Tyson Mackey. He was a retired bookkeeper with Allen Construction Company and a member of the Ravenna Christian Church. He was also a former member of the Masonic Lodge.
    Mr. Mackey is survived by his wife, Eloise J. Masters Mackey; his son, Robert H. Mackey (Patricia), North Vernon, Indiana; two grandchildren: Erin Mease, Orlando, Florida; and Robyn Mackey Hensley, Lexington; and two great grandchildren, Josey Mease and Samantha Mease.
    He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Humble; and his brother, Jack Mackey.
    Graveside services were conducted Friday, July 15th at 1 p.m. at the Oakdale Cemetery by Bro. Tony White.
    Pallbearers were Richard Snowden, Greg Horn, Greg Snowden, Glenn Wise and Robert Mackey.

Lonnie Reece Smyth, 89

Lonnie Reece Smyth

    Lonnie Reece Smyth, age 89, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016 at Hospice of Dayton.
    He was born in Estill County, Kentucky on November 22, 1926 to Henry Omar “Jack” & Nona (Chaney) Smyth. Lonnie was a master repairman at N.C.R. for over 32 years. He was also the Director of the Community Center in Tomball, Texas. Lonnie was a United States Navy Seabee during World War II, and in 1950, joined the Army Air Corps, where he was stationed in the United Kingdom during the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Masonic Lodge.
    Mr. Smyth was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vivian Rosemary Smyth, in 2015.
    Surviving are his daughter, Brenda Hamilton (Jay Dee); his son, Lonnie Reece Smyth, Jr. (Jessy Savo); two grandchildren: Jeffrey Paul Hamilton (Carrie) and Janice Bullock (Josh); five sisters: Vicie Alcorn, Margie Flannery, Pauline Kash Hudson, Anna Smyth and Janet Dixon; a beloved sister-in-law, Janice Moss; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
    He was also preceded in death by three sisters: Lillian Sparks, Juanita Henry and Lucille Henderson.
    The funeral service was at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 16th at the George C. Martin Funeral Home, “Northridge Chapel,” 5040 Frederick Pike at Needmore Road in Dayton. Interment was at Poplar Hill Cemetery, Vandalia. The family received friends Saturday after 10 a.m., prior to the service, at the George C. Martin Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Dayton.

Paul G. Watson

    Paul G. Watson, age 78, husband of Louise Young Watson, passed away Monday, July 11, 2016, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.
    He was a native of Estill County, born November 9, 1937, a son of the late Pearl and Ruth Powell Watson. He was a United States Army Veteran. Mr. Watson was an entrepreneur, having several businesses in Estill County. He founded the Burger Barn in 1973, he also owned used car lots, service stations, groceries, and a contracting company throughout the years. He also enjoyed collecting antiques.
    Mr. Watson was preceded in death by a grandson, Bradley Wayne Watson.
    Survivors other than his wife of 39 years, Louise, include his daughter, Paula Rison (Phil); his son, Bruce Watson (Regina); his step-daughter, Teresa Mitchell (Mark); his brothers: Sam Watson (Donna) and Fred Watson (Ann); his grandchildren: Tyler Watson (Jimmi Lynn), Matthew Ryan Mitchell, Lindsay Ann Maples (Austin), and William Colby Rison; and his great grandchildren: William Andrew Maples and Bo Bradley Watson.
    Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 16th at Lewis Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Rose officiating. Burial followed in the West Irvine Cemetery. Friends called anytime after 10:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Tina Renee Fugate, 49

    Tina Renee Fugate, age 49, of 2nd Street in Slidell, Louisiana; passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016, at her home following a sudden illness.
    She was born March 1, 1967 in Madison County and was the daughter of Alvin Ballard and JoAnn Scenters Jones. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Ms. Fugate is survived by her mother, JoAnn Scenters Jones (Scott), Estill County; her father, Alvin Ballard; two daughters: Rachel Smith and Jessica Seals, both of Estill County; and three sons: Brandon Toler, Estill County; Casey Fugate, Perry County; and Johnny Seals, Estill County.
    She was preceded in death by one son, Randall Toler.
    Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 16th at 1 p.m. at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Paul Groves. Burial was at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends called after 11 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

James R. Townsend, 78

    James R. Townsend, age 78, passed away at his home, Friday, July 8, 2016, after a long illness.
    He was a native of Frankfort, born May 5, 1938, a son of the late Cassius and Linda Pitts Townsend. He was a retired mason, who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
    Mr. Townsend was preceded in death by grandson Michael Townsend; his brothers Allen Crowe, and George Townsend.
    Survivors include his companion of 57 years, Mary F. Townsend; his sons: Cassius Townsend III, James E. Townsend (Bobbie), Johnson Townsend (Amy), Joe Townsend, and Richard Neal; his daughters: Connie Estes (Jacob), Dorothy Walling (Henry Knight), and Jessica Townsend; his brothers: Paul Townsend, Cassius Townsend II (Neabie), and Creed Joe Townsend (Alice); his sisters: Sandra Hardy, Rethia Gooch, Mary Kirby (Edward Smith), Rhonda Gabbard, Bernice Willis, and Wanda Willis (Farrell); his grandchildren: Victoria & Logan Townsend, Melissa Townsend, Latasha Alexander, Leighann Alexander, Clayton Mays, Chris Hoover, Josh Walling, Marlena Richardson, Gloria Bingham, Lester lee Richardson, Carly Townsend, Corey Townsend, and Ethan Townsend; and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Charles Earl Underwood II, 32

    Charles Earl Underwood II, of Richmond, Kentucky, was born May 23, 1984 and departed this life July 6, 2016. He was a 2003 graduate of Madison Central High School.
    He worked as a flooring installer, most recently with Van Rose.
    Charles leaves behind a son, Charles Earl Underwood III, and Little Charlie’s mom, Kiesha Gibson; his parents Charles Earl “Wolf” Underwood and Lisa Terri Renfro; his little sister, Jeanene Nicole Underwood; his special nieces, Nora and Teri Ann Mullins; and sisters: Michelle Meier, Lola Underwood and Alverta Underwood. Charles is also survived by his aunts and uncles, numerous cousins, his nieces and nephews and many friends who will miss his friendship.
    He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Wes and Betty Underwood; and his maternal grandparents, Herman and Gracie Renfro.
    Pallbearers were Daniel Martinez, Kevin Renfro, Nicholas Barron, Lee Henry Renfro, Donnie Underwood, Josh Henry and Russell Ambrose.
    Honorary pallbearers were all his aunts and uncles, a special uncle Scott, Johnny Wayne, Juice, Earily, Van Rose, Connie, Penny and David Salmons and all those who loved Charles.
    His services were held Monday, July 11th at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home. His uncle, the Reverend Owen Moody officiated. Charles was laid to rest at the Johnson Cemetery.
    A fellowship dinner was hosted by the Richmond House of Prayer following the services.
    The Renfro and the Underwood families would like to say thank you for the outpouring support and love. We are humbled. Continue to pray for all of us. Rest in peace, Charles.

George Brock Lamb, Jr., 72

    George Brock Lamb, Jr., age 72, widower of Elizabeth Ann Lamb, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at his home.
    He was born on October 11, 1943, in Estill County, Kentucky, to the late George Brock Lamb, Sr. and Hazel Wagers Lamb. He was retired from Square D. He was a member of Forest Grove Christian Church and a veteran of the United States Army.
    Survivors include one son, Jeffrey Lamb; a granddaughter, Haley Lamb; an unborn great grandson, Mason McIntosh; one brother, Tony Lamb (Sandra); a nephew, Eric Lamb; a niece, Tonya Lamb; a great nephew, Weston Lamb; a special friend, Juanita Jones; and several nieces and nephews.
    Visitation was Friday, July 8th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Forest Grove Christian Church, 4733 Old Boonesboro Road in Winchester. Services were at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 9, 2016 at the church by Pastor Larry Deckard. Burial was in Winchester Cemetery.
    Pallbearers were Larry Centers, Michael Arvin, Austin McIntosh, Jeff Beckett, E.B. Stacy, Ray Harold Hardy, H.T. "Butch" Hardy, Jr.
    Honorary pallbearers were the Peddlers Mall Pickers.

Aaron Lincoln Abney

    Aaron Lincoln Abney, age 33, St. George, Kansas, passed away peacefully, Monday, July 4, 2016 at his home.
    Aaron was born on March 14, 1983 to Ova and Lisa (Gay) Abney in Irvine, Kentucky. He graduated from Estill County High School in 2001. After a few years of work, Aaron enlisted in the United States Army in 2009. He served overseas in Iraq from 2011 – 2012 and was honorably discharged in 2014.
    Aaron was an avid outdoorsmen who enjoyed being in the woods. He was an avid trapper, hunter, and Notre Dame football fan. He also enjoyed woodworking, making benches, chests, walking sticks, and even a bed frame. Aaron was known as a simple man and will be missed.
    He is survived by three daughters: Chloe Abney, Irvine; Leigha and Jocelyn Abney, both of Mt. Vernon; a sister, Ashley Abney; a girlfriend: Jessie Redding, St. George, Kansas; other family members, Jody Justin and Shannon Redding, all of St. George; and several friends and loved ones.
    Visitation for Aaron was Saturday, July 16, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Interment will follow at the St. George Cemetery in St. George, Kansas, with military honors.
    The family has suggested memorials to American Cancer Society, and may be left in care of Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.

    Jane Baber Christopher, age 91, widow of Wayne Christopher, passed away Monday, July 4, 2016 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.
    A native of Irvine, she was born March 22, 1924, the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Virginia Baber.
    Mrs. Christopher was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Hancock.
    She was a member of the Irvine United Methodist Church, Four Seasons Garden Club, United Methodist Womens Association, Estill County Book Club, Estill County Homemakers and was instrumental in the organization of the Estill County Library. She was a retired social worker for the State of Kentucky.
    Survivors include her son, Mark Christopher (Carol); daughters, Jane Scott Bentley and Lisa Grimes (Bill); five grandchildren: Jane Katherine Moores (Ian), Grant Christopher, James Christopher Bentley, Reed Christopher, and Tate Christopher; four great grandchildren: Jane Alise Moores, Nora Moores, James Bentley, and Jacob Bentley; and many nieces and nephews.
    Services were held Wednesday, July 13th, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Lewis Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hatton officiating. Burial will follow at the Oakdale Cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12th at the funeral home.

Ailene Smith Case, 84

    Ailene Smith Case, age 84, passed away Sunday, July 3, 2016, surrounded by family and friends.
    She was a native of Estill County, born at Fitchburg, Kentucky, on March 27, 1932, the daughter of the late George D. and Bertie Howell Smith.
    Mrs. Case was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Case Jr.
    She was a member of the Cobhill Crossroads Community Church, serving as treasurer for many years. She was a retired employee of the Estill County Schools where she was a cook at the Estill County High School. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed quilting, crocheting, cooking, baking pies and chocolate no bake cookies, a family favorite.
    Ailene is survived by her children, Ava Rogers (Raven), Stanton; Gary (Jean) Case, Irvine; Debra Patrick (Elwood), Connie Case, both of Irvine; Vonda Dunn (Ralph), Clay City; and Johnny Case (Missy), Stanton; as well as grandchildren Melissa Rogers Henning, David Rogers, Chris Rogers, Woody Patrick, Eric Patrick, Casey Patrick Kirby, Darla Dunn and Chandra Dunn and fourteen great grandchildren.
    She is survived by her siblings, Wayne Smith (Virginia), Denny Smith (Vivian), Freda Hardy (Ray Harold), Elwanda Roberts (Kirby), and Billy Darrell Smith (Sharon); and several nieces and nephews.
    Services were Friday, July 8th at 2:00 p.m. at the Cobhill Crossroads Community Church with Bros. Elwood Patrick and Gainus Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Cobhill Cemetery. Friends may call at the church after 6:00 p.m., Thursday, July 7th and on Friday, July 8th from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.
    Pallbearers were Gary Case, David Rogers, Chris Rogers, Woody Patrick, Eric Patrick and Brennan Rogers.

Duane Smith, 56

Duane Smith

    Duane Smith, age 56 of Little Hardwick's Creek in Clay City, Kentucky, passed away Friday, July 1, 2016 at his residence.
    He worked in the oil fields and Refineries in Texas and had a love of motorcycles and fishing.
    Mr. Smith is survived by his mother, Myrta Boswell; one son, Duane Thomas Wynnett (Kelly) of Irvine; two brothers: Darrel Smith (Beth) of Diamond Head, Mississippi; and Scott Smith (Tracie) of Clay City; a special cousin, Dana Allen of Stanton; a special aunt, Irvaleen Marcum of Clay City; and special niece and nephew, Ian and Megan Smith of Stanton.
    The family held a private graveside service.
    In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Hospice East or the Vaughan’s Mill First Church of God.

KY 89 (North Main Street) to be closed at Estill Springs, July 11-21

    KY 89 (North Main Street/Winchester Road) at the north city limits of Irvine in Estill County was closed beginning Monday, July 11. The road was closed at milepoint 12.1, between Estill Springs Elementary School and Geneva Avenue. The road will be closed for approximately 10 days and is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Friday, July 22.
    No signed or marked detour will be posted. Drivers can use KY 499 (the Irvine bypass) and KY 52 (Richmond Road) as an alternate route. Motorists should plan their trips accordingly.
    The closure is required for removal and replacement of the bridge over Sweet Lick Creek, and is part of the ongoing project to widen KY 89 on the north side of Irvine.
    During this 10-day period, construction crews will also be installing several cross drains along the portion of KY 89 that remains open. Drivers who use this section of highway should expect delays while that work is ongoing.
