2017 Color 5K Run and 2K Walk

Despite rainy conditions on Saturday night, a large crowd of people still gathered along River Drive to visit with friends and watch the cars cruise the strip.

Participants of the Color Run finished up the events by having a color splash on Broadway.

Labor Day Holiday with "Picnic in the Park"

    Labor Day weekend got started Friday evening with “Picnic in the Park,” a fundraiser for River City Players. The event was scheduled to be held at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street in Ravenna but because of rains from Hurricane Harvey, was moved to the Estill County Fairbarn, 38 South Irvine Road.
    The band, Faded Blue, started performing at 6 p.m. They are a top vocal, variety band in Central Kentucky.
    There was also dancing during the event. Cloggers were there, and the audience was invited to join in.

Motion filed to close local landfill

    A motion filed by the Estill Fiscal Court was heard on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Estill Circuit Court to close the local landfill operated by Advanced Disposal.
    Judge Wallace Taylor stated on Monday that the landfill has violated the terms of the host community agreement.

Ruby T. Richardson, 85

    Ruby T. Richardson, age 85, of North Court Street in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 10, 2017, at the Compassionate Care Center Richmond, following a long illness.
    She was born June 17, 1932 in Madison County and was the daughter of the late Johnny and Naomi Johnson Tuttle. She was a former employee of Honchell’s Jeans and Things and had lived in Estill County all her life. She was a member of the Irvine First Christian Church where she sang in the choir. She graduated from Estill County High School where she was a merit scholar and a member of the marching band.
    Mrs. Richardson was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth D. Richardson.
    She is survived by one daughter, Brenda Honchell (Mark), Estill County; one son: Darrell Richardson (Emma), Estill County; one brother, Ken Tuttle, Estill County; and two grandchildren: Chelsea Honchell and John Honchell.
    Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 14, 11:00 a.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Greg Humpert. Burial will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesday, September 13th at the funeral home.

Wallace Harold Arthur, 69

    Wallace Harold Arthur, 69, of Frankfort, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Taylor Manor in Versailles.
    He was born on December 23, 1947 in Estill County, the son of the late Ray Newton and Luceille Dixon Arthur. He had worked as a Human Resources Director and was a member of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior.
    Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Morris Arthur; one son, Christopher Stewart Arthur; two brothers: William Ray Arthur and Jeffrey Dixon Arthur (Leeanne); three stepchildren; five step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Thomas Arthur.
    Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at the Episcopal Church of Our Savior, 2323 Lexington Road, Richmond, with Rev. Dana Lockhart officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens at West Irvine. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, at the church under the direction of Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home.

Beryl S. Hunt,

    Beryl S. Hunt, age 94, of Lexington, Kentucky, formerly of Irvine, passed away Friday, September 8, 2017 at St. Joseph Hospital.
    She was born on March 12, 1923 in Breathitt County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Basil Walter and Chelsa Oaks Seale. Beryl was a graduate of Irvine High School. She was a member of the Eastern Star and loved playing cards, especially Bridge and Rook.
    Beryl was preceded in death by her husband, Harold K. Hunt; a brother, Basil E. Seale; and a sister, Sue Floyd.
    She is survived by her son, William Kent Hunt (Peggy), Lexington; a brother, William L. Seale, New Albany, Indiana; a sister, Doris Traylor, Columbus, Indiana; two granddaughters: Kendall Anderson (Matt), Sikeston, Missouri; and Carmen Bowen (Jim), Lexington, two great grandchildren; Madelyn Grace Elledge and Hayden Matthew Anderson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
    Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, September 11, at Wisemantown United Methodist Church, 1359 Wisemantown Road, with Pastor Greg McClellan officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Winchester Cemetery.
    Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Donald Ray Luster, 70

    Donald Ray Luster, age 70, of Dare Drive in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, September 9, 2017, at his home, following a short illness.
    He was born November 18, 1946, in Estill County, a son of the late Luther and Lillie Mae Dozier Luster. He was a contractor and had lived in Estill County most of his life.
    Mr. Luster was preceded in death by his first wife, Patsy Hardy Luster.
    He is survived by his wife, Marietta Damron Luster; two daughters: Mary Elizabeth Cline (Tim), Estill County; and Tina Nix (Adrian), Berea; a son, Timothy Luster (Tonya), Estill County; two stepdaughters: Anita Wagner, Mt. Sterling; and Treda Phillips, Tennessee; four stepsons: Noah Rose, Tommy Rose, both of Mt. Sterling; Glen Rose, Pike County; and Timothy Rose, West Liberty; two sisters: Goldie Hiten and Debra Luster, both of Frankfort; four brothers: Billy Wayne Luster, Florida; Lawrence Douglas Luster, Richmond; Paul Andrew Luster and Charles Nelson Luster, both of Irvine; 13 grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, and five step-great grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Ray Luster Jr.; and three siblings: Joyce Anita Peters, James Franklin Luster, and Kenneth Howard Luster.

Larry Ray Newcomb

Larry Ray Newcomb, age 68, of Clay City, Kentucky passed away Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Clark Regional Medical Center, Winchester.
    Born April 10, 1949, in Logan, West Virginia he was the son of the late Raymond Newcomb and Patty Dunn Newcomb. He was a United States Army veteran and a member of the Bluegrass Division of The Society of Explosive Engineers. He was a former employee of Hinkle Contracting Corp. and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David "Butch" Newcomb; and by his sister, Shelby Newcomb.
    Larry Newcomb is survived by his wife, Janice Sue Hall Newcomb; one son, Chris Newcomb of Clay City; one daughter, Mona Hall of Shelbyville; one brother, Britt Newcomb (Jaime) of Middletown, Ohio; one sister, Janna Todd of Irvine; one granddaughter, Keleigh Nicole Newcomb; two step grandchildren, Tanner Ryan Chaney and Kinleigh Alexa Patrick; five brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law; 23 nieces and nephews, along with a special friend, Terri Patrick.
    Funeral services officiated by Bro. Johnny Hurt and Bro. Ernie Dudleson will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 9, at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 West College Avenue in Stanton. Visitation begins at 12:00 Noon, until time of service, Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in McCoy Cemetery with Jeff Hall, Danny Hall, Matthew Todd, David Newcomb, Tanner Chaney, Danny Everman and Terry Winkle serving as active pallbearers.

    Anna Lois Embs, age 74, of South Irvine Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at her home following a long illness.
    She was born March 27, 1943 in Nicholasville, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Leslie and Isabell Reece Canter. She was a homemaker and a member of the New Bethel Baptist #2 Church. She had lived in Estill County most of her life.
    Ms. Embs is survived by two daughters: Junnie Lynn Conrad and Sandra Ray Conrad, both of Estill County; three sons: Jerry Conrad, Menifee County; Samuel Glenn Conrad and Terry Wayne Conrad, both of Estill County; two brothers: Douglas Canter and David Lee Canter, both of Estill County; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren
    She was preceded in death by two sisters: Brenda Joy Conrad and Eula Flynn.
    Funeral services were conducted Friday, September 8, 1:00 p.m., at the Warren F. Toler Funeral Home Chapel by Bro. Adrian McKinney. Burial was at the Double Oak Cemetery. Friends called between 6 and 9 p.m., Thursday, September 7th at the funeral home.

Jenny Lynn Brown

    Jenny Lynn Brown, age 63, of Beattyville, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington, KY.
    Jenny was born August 1, 1954, in Brooksville, Kentucky, a daughter to the late Marvin and Helen (Martin) Brown. She was a retired school teacher with the Bracken County Board of Education, a member of the Brooksville United Methodist Church and also a faithful member at Warrens Chapel in Vincent, Kentucky.
    She is survived by her loving fiancé of 28 years, Rodney Marcum; one daughter, April Miller (David) of Carrolton; three sisters: Patricia Boggs (Billy), Brenda Free (Bobby), both of Brooksville; and Pam Stoltz of Lexington; three nieces, four nephews, three great nieces,three great nephews; one granddaughter, Taylor Miller; a sister-in-law, Javenne Brandenburg (Earl) of Irvine; three brothers-in-law, Teddy Paul Marcum (Cindy), of Winchester; Johnnie H. Marcum (Joni) of Beattyville; and Brian Marcum (Lesa) of Booneville; six nieces: Sonya Carroll (Terry), Missy Hunt (Teddy), Ashley Marcum, Rachel Marcum, Tamanya Marcum, and Poreche Marcum; two nephews: Chris Marcum (Crystal) and Jordan Marcum (Miranda), seven great nieces: Teia, Keyona, Tedra, Alexus, Aaleigha, Peyton, and Addi; four great nephews: Chris, Ashton, Logan, and Cayden Jayce; and a special nephew, Keaton Marcum; along with many other loving family members and friends.
    Jenny was preceded in death by her parents and Johnnie and Joyce Marcum (Pap and Granny).
    Visitation will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 11:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Booneville Funeral Home, 3450 Ky Hwy 11 North in Booneville, followed by funeral service at 2:30 p.m., with Pastors Jamie Brunk and Scott Brandenburg officiating. Jenny will be laid to rest in the Marcum Family Cemetery, located in the Pebworth Community of Booneville.

    Nana Orlena Tucker, age 84, of Turpin Ridge Road in Irvine, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017, at her home, following a long illness.
    She was born November 27, 1932, in Owsley County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Lucy Belle Simmons Childers. She was a former employee of K-Mart and had lived in Madison County most of her life. She was a member of the Baptist Church.
    Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Tucker.
    She is survived by a son, Robert Lee Tucker Jr,. Estill County; and one brother, Tom Childers, Ohio.
    In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by one son, Daniel Jay Tucker; two sisters: Clara Childers and Betty Childers; five brothers: Bob, Joe, Charles, Doug, and Tom Childers; and a grandson, Robert Lee Tucker III.
    Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, September 7, 11 a.m. at the Tucker Cemetery.

    Johnny Burdell Fox was born March 17, 1956 in Jackson County, Kentucky, and departed this life Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at his residence, being 61 years of age.
    He was the son of the late Ezart and Margie (Redden) Fox.
    Johnny is survived by two children, Mark Fox (Tracy) and Margie Colleen Harrison (Paul), both of McKee. He is also survived by a sister, Wanda Feltner of Berea; and by four brothers, Hubie Fox, Bill Fox, Joe Fox and Jimmy Fox, all of Irvine. Johnny was blessed with five grandchildren: Jordan Fox (Tiffany), Travis Fox, Tyler Harrison, Lyndsey Harrison and Triston Harrison; and by three great grandchildren, Colton, Lakeyn & Carter Fox.
    In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda (Hisel) Fox.
    He was a member of the Drip Rock Baptist Church.
    Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 2, at Lakes Funeral Home McKee, 1181 Main Street, South, with Bro. Darrell Isaacs officiating. Burial to follow in the Hisel Cemetery.

Glenn C. Walling

    Glenn C. Walling, age 74, of Lexington, Kentucky husband of Peggy Lynn Reese Walling, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2017.
    Born to the late Clyde and Cornelia Wolfinbarger Walling on Aug. 16, 1943, Glenn retired from Rand McNally after 35 years. He loved his family, which included dogs, cats, and birds. He also enjoyed antique cars.
    In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Ann Walling of Lexington; one brother, Jerry Walling (Ramona) of Lawrenceburg; three grandchildren, Zachary and Jacob Walling of Lexington; and Tiffany Walling Parsons of Versailles; a host of nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Hunt of Irvine and Margie Walling of Winchester.
    Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother Larry Walling.
    Funeral service will be Saturday, September 1, at 3:00 p.m., with visitation from 1-3 p.m., at Milward-Broadway, 159 North Broadway, Lexington. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 2089 Versailles Road.

Mavis Lynn Hall Adams

    Mavis Lynn Hall Adams, age 69, wife of Damon Adams of Stanton, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Saint Joseph East in Lexington.
    Born in Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Willis Hall and the late Carrie Pigg Hall. She was a former administrative secretary at Veterans Administration Hospital and she was a member of Stanton Christian Church.
    Mrs. Adams is survived by her husband, Damon Adams; and by four stepchildren: Bill Adams (Connie) of Stanton, David Adams (Patty) and Candie Baker (Doug), both of Irvine; and Carlotta Opperman (Jake) of Troy, Ohio; one brother, Kenneth Hall (Pat) of Versailles; one sister, Vanessa "Red" Marshall (Jerry) of Lexington; eight step-grandchildren; 10 step-great grandchildren; two very special nieces and two very special nephews.
    Funeral services officiated by Tom Graham and Bro. Greg Webb will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 2, at Hearne Funeral Home, Inc., 125 West College Avenue, Stanton. Visitation begins at 11:00 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday at the funeral home. Dorothy May Hall Williams, 94

    Dorothy May Hall Williams, age 94, of Irvine, Kentucky, daughter of the late Frank and Grace Hall, passed away Monday, August 28, 2017 at Central Baptist in Lexington.
    She was born May 15, 1923 and was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Grace Hall; a brother, Troy Hall; her husband, Robert S. Williams; and her son, Robert S. (Bobby) Williams, Jr.
    Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughter, Linda Grens; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; nine great, great grandchildren; one sister, Agnes Dixon; and many nieces and nephews.
    She was a member of Boone's Creek Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky. She was an avid UK fan. She and her husband sang on the radio (WLAP) years ago where they had their own program, "The Bob and Dot Show". They enjoyed performing at different venues throughout the years.
    Services will be Thursday, August 31, at 2:00 p.m., with Bro. Marvin Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Friends may call anytime after 12:00 Noon on Thursday.
    Serving as pallbearers will be Jeff Jones, R.B. Browning, Ryan Birchfield, Chayce Birchfield, Kirk Williams and Richard Browning.
